From summer employee to reception manager – Annika Taskinen’s Career Story

I come from the heart of Savo, the city of Kuopio. In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym, traveling around Finland, and experiencing different kinds of cultural activities.

Studies

I completed a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Savonia University of Applied Sciences in the Business Development programme. I started my studies in autumn 2022 and graduated in spring 2025. I completed my studies alongside full-time work while serving as Reception Manager at Matkailukeskus Rauhalahti.

During my studies, I also had the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus Programme, through which I traveled to Paris for a week-long study trip to explore a local university and an international student environment.

Thoughts after graduation and work experience

After graduation, I continued in my current role, applying the knowledge and skills I gained from my studies to practical work. With my new expertise, I was also given additional responsibilities in my position.

I have spent my entire career at Matkailukeskus Rauhalahti. I started there as a summer employee in 2011, working in the summer shop, and over the years I progressed through different departments to my current role as Reception Manager. I have been permanently employed since 2016, and in 2026 I will celebrate ten years of my career at Matkailukeskus Rauhalahti.

Competences gained from studies

The skills I acquired during my studies have supported my career in many ways, but I consider leadership and supervisory skills to be especially significant. The education provided practical tools for developing my own professional approach and strengthened my ability to become an even better supervisor for seasonal employees. In addition, my studies helped me identify areas for development within the work community and promote them in a goal-oriented way.

Tips for students and graduates

For current students and those about to graduate, I would like to offer this advice: start things early, stay active, ask for help when needed, and build networks. And above all, embrace opportunities, ask questions, challenge ideas, and enjoy the journey.
